Scratch cards and draws, compared Updated 26 Oct 2026

Lottery vs Scratch Cards: Which Has Better Winning Odds?

Scratch cards and lottery draws are both games of chance run by the same kind of operator, but they spread their prize money in very different ways. A draw puts most of the excitement into one jackpot with very long odds. A scratch card prints a fixed set of prizes into a fixed run of cards, so small wins come round often and the top prize is rare.

Neither is a way to make money. Both are designed to pay back less than players spend in total, and no choice of card, shop or numbers changes the odds printed for a game. What you can compare is how often each one pays something, how big the top prize is, and how fast you get through your budget.

  • Scratch card odds are fixed when the cards are printed
  • Draw odds depend on the matrix of the lottery you play
  • Both return less than they take in

What a draw jackpot looks like in numbers

The ladder shows the chance of winning the Powerball jackpot in one draw as you hold more lines.

A scratch card prize either is or is not printed under the coating when you buy it. A draw jackpot depends on one combination out of every possible one, and each line you hold covers exactly one of them.

Holding ten different lines makes a jackpot ten times as likely as holding one, and costs ten times as much. The odds stay long at any budget most people would spend.

  1. 1 line 1 in 292,201,338
  2. 10 lines 1 in 29,220,134
  3. 50 lines 1 in 5,844,027
  4. 100 lines 1 in 2,922,013
  5. 500 lines 1 in 584,403
Lines Group odds of the jackpot Against one line
1 line 1 in 292,201,338 1× as likely
10 lines 1 in 29,220,134 10× as likely
50 lines 1 in 5,844,027 50× as likely
100 lines 1 in 2,922,013 100× as likely
500 lines 1 in 584,403 500× as likely

One Powerball line has jackpot odds of 1 in 292,201,338. Different lines add their chances; a shared prize is split by share.

How the two games differ

How the odds are set

A scratch card game prints a set number of cards with a set number of prizes, so the overall odds are known before a card is sold. A draw's odds come from how many numbers you pick and how many are in the pool.

How often they pay

Scratch cards are built to pay small prizes often, frequently no more than the card cost. Most draw lines win nothing, and the smaller tiers make up most of the wins that do happen.

Top prizes

Draw jackpots roll over when nobody wins and can grow very large. A scratch card's top prize is fixed and there are only a few of them in each print run, some of which may already have been claimed.

Speed of play

A draw takes your stake once and settles on draw day. A scratch card settles in seconds, and winnings are easy to put straight back into more cards, so a budget goes faster.

What to check on any scratch card or draw

These are the details that tell you what a game is really offering.

  1. The overall odds

Most scratch cards print the odds of winning any prize on the card or the lottery's website. Remember that a win at those odds is often just your stake back.

  2. Prizes still unclaimed

Many lotteries publish how many top prizes remain in each scratch card game. A game whose top prizes are gone still sells cards.

  3. The draw's matrix and prize tiers

How many numbers you pick from how big a pool decides the jackpot odds. The official rules list every tier and what it pays.

  4. Your own limit

Set a weekly or monthly amount before you start and stop when it is spent. Fast games make this harder, not easier.

Panel Questions

Scratch cards and lotteries: common questions

Do scratch cards have better odds than the lottery?

Better odds of winning something, usually yes, because scratch cards are designed to pay small prizes often. Much of that is prizes equal to or barely above the card price. The odds of a scratch card's top prize and of a draw jackpot are both long, and both games return less than players pay in overall.

Can I improve my chances on scratch cards?

No. The prizes are printed before the cards are sold, and there is no way to tell from the outside which card wins. Buying in a particular shop, at a particular time or from a fresh roll makes no difference. Checking which games still have top prizes unclaimed tells you what you can win, not whether you will.

Can I improve my chances in a lottery draw?

Only by holding more different lines, which costs proportionally more, or by playing a lottery with a smaller matrix. Every combination has the same chance in each draw and past draws have no effect on the next. See lotto winning odds for how the numbers work.

Which is better value?

Neither pays back what players spend as a group. Scratch cards give you more frequent small wins and a quick result; draws give you a much bigger top prize at much longer odds. If you play, choose for the kind of game you enjoy, at a cost you set in advance.

Can I play scratch cards online?

Many lotteries and licensed sites sell digital instant win games that work like scratch cards. They play even faster than paper cards, so limits matter more. Our lottery sites page lists sites we have reviewed.
